You will likely need to make several adjustments to your dentures as your mouth adjusts to the appliance. Occasional maintenance will also need to be performed to keep the appliance in the best condition possible. Some of the denture maintenance we may perform includes denture relines, denture rebasing and denture repairs.
Denture Relines
Your gum tissues will change over time, causing your denture to become loose. To ensure that your dentures remain secure in your mouth and function properly, you should have them professionally relined every one to two years.
There are several types of denture relines which our dentist may perform:
- Hard denture reline – All dentures should be hard relined every two years. This involves removing and replacing a layer of plastic from the interior surface so that it matches the new shape of your gum tissue.
- Soft denture reline – Soft denture relines are recommended for patients who are unable to wear ordinary dentures due to tender gums or sore spots. Soft denture relines involve replacing the interior lining of your denture with a pliable material. A soft reline will need to be replaced every one to two years.
- Temporary reline – Temporary relines are used to help inflammation in your mouth subside so that your gums can return to a more normal state before we replace the denture or provide a soft or hard reline.
Denture Rebase
Denture rebasing is recommended when the base material is worn out, even if the teeth of the appliance are still in good condition. Our dentist will replace the entire base of your denture without replacing the teeth. Denture rebasing may be recommended when your denture is broken, damaged or weakened, or when you are replacing an immediate denture.
